Born in Armenia, Colombia, he became a founding member of the Medellin Cartel, eventually taking control of an island in the Bahamas and using it to transport cocaine between Colombia and the U.S. Once he was arrested, and sentenced to 135 years in jail. At the time of his arrest government officials seized Lehder’s bank accounts and took ownership of his possessions bankrupting the gangster.
